(SEM III) THEORY EXAMINATION 2022-23 MATERIAL SCIENCE
This question paper covers the core concepts of Engineering Materials and evaluates a student’s understanding of the structure, properties, and behavior of various materials used in engineering applications. The exam consists of three sections (A, B, and C), carrying a total of 100 marks, and requires students to attempt all sections.
Section A contains short, conceptual questions testing fundamental knowledge on topics such as equilibrium diagrams, phases, TTT diagrams, alloying elements, fracture behavior, magnetic materials, superconductivity, ceramics, composites, and glass. These questions ensure clarity in the basic theoretical framework of material science.
Section B includes descriptive and analytical questions requiring deeper explanations. Students are asked to discuss solid solubility rules (Hume–Rothery rules), draw and interpret the Fe–Fe₃C phase diagram, explain strengthening mechanisms in metals and alloys, and describe magnetic hysteresis and tempered glass production. These questions assess comprehension, diagrammatic representation, and engineering application knowledge.
Section C consists of long-answer, application-based questions focused on advanced concepts. Students must attempt one question from each subsection. Topics include:
– Gibb’s phase rule and eutectic diagrams
– Fick’s laws of diffusion and TTT diagrams
– Creep behavior and fracture mechanisms (brittle and ductile)
– Magnetic classifications (diamagnetic, paramagnetic, ferromagnetic)
– Electrical conductivity differences across metals, semiconductors, and insulators
– Glass-ceramics formation and nanomaterial applications
Overall, this paper evaluates a student’s ability to understand, analyze, and apply principles of material science in real engineering contexts. It ensures mastery over microstructure, mechanical behavior, thermal effects, magnetic characteristics, and the technological importance of various materials used in industry.
