(SEM III) THEORY EXAMINATION 2022-23 MATERIALS ENGINEERING
This question paper is designed to test the fundamental understanding, analytical skills, and application-based knowledge of students in the subject Engineering Materials. It covers a wide range of topics from material properties, crystal structures, phase diagrams, heat treatment processes, mechanical behavior, and modern engineering materials.
Section A – Short Answer Questions (20 Marks)
This section contains 10 concise questions, each carrying 2 marks. The questions are conceptual and check the student’s basic understanding of:
Unit cell and crystal structure terms
Mechanical properties such as malleability and fatigue
Material classification (alloy vs. ore)
Heat treatment, its need and purpose
Phase diagrams and degree of freedom
Carbon percentage in tool steels
Difference between microstructures (Martensite & Cementite)
This section emphasizes clarity of fundamental concepts.
Section B – Descriptive / Analytical Questions (30 Marks)
Students must attempt any 3 out of 5 questions, each carrying 10 marks.
This section tests in-depth understanding and the ability to explain with sketches and examples. Topics include:
Detailed explanation of crystal systems
Mechanisms of ductile and brittle failure
The complete Iron–Carbon equilibrium diagram
Annealing & normalizing processes and their impact on properties
Properties and engineering applications of Stainless steel & Tool steel
The questions require diagrams, reasoning, and deep conceptual clarity.
Section C – Long Answer / Application-Based Questions (50 Marks)
This section contains 5 questions, each with two alternatives, from which students must attempt one per question. Every question carries 10 marks.
It evaluates analytical ability, reasoning, and real-world engineering application.
The topics include:
Q3 – Imperfections & Mechanical Behavior
Types of line defects (dislocations) with diagrams
Load-deformation behavior of brittle materials
Q4 – Failure Theories / Fatigue
Static failure theories (e.g., Maximum principal stress theory)
S–N curve behavior for ferrous and non-ferrous alloys
Q5 – Solid Solutions / Microstructure
Types of solid solutions (substitutional & interstitial)
Micro-constituents of eutectoid steel
Q6 – Heat Treatment Processes
Tempering and its types
Case hardening and its methods (carburizing, nitriding, etc.)
Q7 – Advanced Engineering Materials
Nickel-based superalloys
Other advanced engineering materials and their properties
This section requires detailed explanations supported with diagrams, formulas, and engineering relevance.
Overall Description
This paper comprehensively assesses a student’s knowledge of engineering materials, including:
Crystallography
Mechanical properties
Phase diagrams
Heat treatment
Failure mechanisms
Advanced materials
Practical engineering applications
It is structured to test basic understanding, analytical depth, diagrammatic skills, and applied problem-solving abilities.
