(SEM III) THEORY EXAMINATION 2019-20 MATERIALS ENGINEERING
This document is the B.Tech SEM–III Theory Examination 2019–20 question paper for Materials Engineering (Sub Code: KME303) under Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU).

SECTION A — Short Questions (10 × 2 = 20 Marks)

Drawing planes for Miller indices (111) & (101)
Difference between ductile vs brittle fracture
Difference between NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) and DT (Destructive Testing)
Gibb’s phase rule
Invariant reaction and eutectic reaction
Difference between annealing vs normalizing
Quenching mediums in decreasing order of cooling rate
Constituents of HSS (High Speed Steel) and their purpose
Uses of copper and aluminium
These questions test fundamental definitions and the ability to recall basic metallurgical knowledge.
SECTION B — Long Questions (Attempt Any 3 × 10 = 30 Marks)

Students must attempt any three out of five 10-mark questions.
Topics include:
Types of imperfections in crystals
Plastic deformation & dislocation mechanisms
Phase diagrams & alloy classification
Heat treatment processes
Properties and selection of engineering materials
These require descriptive understanding, diagrams, and explanation.

Section C contains three major questions (Q5, Q6, Q7), each with two alternatives (a or b).
Students must answer ONE from each pair.

(b) Short note on Austempering and Martempering, including purpose and advantages.
Q7 — Alloying & Engineering Alloys

(a) Purpose of alloying steels + different types of steels & their applications
(b) Composition and applications of brass and bronze
These questions require diagrams, heat treatment curves, and alloy compositions.
