(SEM III) THEORY EXAMINATION 2017-18 BUILDING MATERIAL & CONSTRUCTION
This document contains the complete B.Tech (Semester III) Theory Examination 2017–18 question paper for the subject Building Material & Construction (RCE-301). The paper consists of 2 printed pages, carries 70 marks, and is divided into Section A, Section B, and Section C, covering a broad range of topics related to building materials, construction techniques, structural components, and testing methods.
Section A — Short Conceptual Questions
Section A includes seven short questions (2 × 7 = 14 marks), designed to evaluate basic understanding of essential construction concepts. The questions focus on:
Definition and use of Fat lime
Meaning and implications of Lime Bursting
Definition of Enamel Paints
Difference between English Bond and Flemish Bond used in brick masonry
Function and purpose of Lintels in building structures
Meaning of the term Door
Explanation of the notation 10 WT 13
These questions test the student’s clarity of fundamental construction materials and basic building components. (Page 1)
Section B — Detailed Descriptive Questions
Section B requires students to answer any three out of five questions (7 × 3 = 21 marks). These questions require deeper explanation, sketches, and understanding of material properties and construction systems, including:
Bogue’s compounds of cement and the chemical composition of cement
Constituents, desirable properties, and various types of paints
Techniques and methods of damp-proofing (DPC)
Description and sketch of a Pitched Roof
Types of traps used in sanitary plumbing
This section evaluates practical knowledge of construction materials, structural components, and building protection systems. (Page 1)
Section C — Long Answer Analytical Questions
Section C includes a series of detailed questions where students must attempt one part from each main question group. This section contains higher-level questions on testing methods, building components, and construction technologies.
Topics covered include:
1. Stones & Bricks
Characteristics of stones, their testing methods, and types used in building construction
Meaning and classification of efflorescence in bricks
2. Plastics & Glass
Ingredients and mechanical properties of plastics
Properties, ingredients, and uses of glass in construction
3. Staircases & Soil Treatment
Requirements of a good staircase, and proportioning of tread and riser
Termite soil treatment and preventive measures
4. Doors & Lintels
Technical terms used in doors
Classification and use of lintels
5. Ventilation, Lifts & Escalators
Definition of ventilation, factors affecting ventilation, and guidelines for public buildings
Differences between a lift and escalator, including functional requirements of lifts
These questions test analytical skills and deep understanding of material behavior, building design planning, and construction practices. (Page 2)
Summary
This exam paper offers a complete evaluation of student knowledge in construction materials, building components, structural elements, sanitary systems, environmental controls, and fundamental engineering practices. It integrates conceptual learning with analytical thinking, sketches, material behavior, and field application—making it a vital academic resource for civil engineering students.
