(SEM-III) -THEORY EXAMINATION (2017-18) MANUFACTURING SCIENCE
This document contains the complete B.Tech Semester III – Theory Examination (2017–18) question paper for the subject Manufacturing Science (RME-301). The paper spans two printed pages, carries 70 marks, and evaluates a student’s understanding of engineering materials, heat treatment, crystal structures, phase diagrams, non-destructive testing, mechanical behavior, and metallurgical concepts.
Section A – Short Theoretical Questions (14 Marks)
Section A includes seven brief questions aimed at testing fundamental material science and manufacturing concepts. Topics include:
The Messier effect
Classification of solids based on energy gaps
Definition and examples of composite materials
Eutectic and eutectoid reactions
Meaning and formula of packing efficiency
Definition of Miller indices
Explanation of the Gibbs phase rule
These questions check foundational knowledge of solid-state physics, materials characterization, and basic metallurgical principles.
Section B – Descriptive Questions (21 Marks)
Students must attempt any three out of five questions. This section focuses on descriptive explanations and classification:
Definition, example, properties, and applications of refractory materials
Difference between ferrous and non-ferrous materials
Classification of heat treatment processes, with emphasis on normalizing
Explanation of carburizing
Detailed classification of ceramics, including examples, properties, and applications
These questions test the student's ability to classify materials and explain their behavior, use, and processing.
Section C – Long & Analytical Problems (35 Marks Total)
Section C contains five main questions, each with two subparts. Students must attempt one part from each.
1. Crystal Structures & Testing Methods
Calculation of atomic packing factor (APF) for BCC and FCC lattices
Meaning of non-destructive testing (NDT) and explanation of any two NDT methods with examples
2. Crystal Imperfections & Phase Rule
Detailed explanation of defects and imperfections in crystals with sketches
Gibbs phase rule and its applications
3. Fracture Mechanics & Destructive Testing
Explanation of fracture, characteristics of brittle vs. ductile fracture
Meaning of degree of freedom, definition of destructive testing, explanation of tensile test with stress–strain curve of mild steel
4. Heat Treatment & Magnetic Materials
TTT diagram for eutectoid steel, effect of cooling rate on transformation and hardness
Difference between diamagnetic, paramagnetic, and ferromagnetic materials (properties & applications)
5. Phase Diagrams & X-Ray Diffraction
Iron–Carbon equilibrium diagram with neat sketch
Explanation of Bragg’s law and the X-ray diffraction method for determining crystal structure
These questions evaluate deeper understanding of metallurgical transformations, crystal geometry, failure analysis, testing techniques, and phase equilibria.
Summary
This exam paper provides a comprehensive assessment of topics essential to Manufacturing Science, including:
Material classification & properties
Heat treatment & phase transformations
Crystallography & crystal defects
Non-destructive and destructive testing
Magnetic materials
Iron–carbon diagram & TTT diagram
X-ray diffraction & Bragg’s Law
It serves as a valuable academic resource for students studying materials science, metallurgy, and manufacturing engineering.
