(SEM III) THEORY EXAMINATION 2017-18 SURVEYING
This document contains the complete B.Tech (Semester III) Theory Examination 2017–18 question paper for the subject Surveying (RCE-302). The paper spans two printed pages, carries a total of 70 marks, and evaluates a student’s understanding of surveying principles, instruments, leveling, traversing, contouring, curve setting, and practical field applications.
Section A – Short Conceptual Questions (14 Marks)
Section A includes seven brief questions testing the student's basic knowledge of fundamental surveying terms and tools. Concepts include:
Initial and final sub-chords in curve setting
Meaning of a 12 cm compass
Interpretation when contour lines cross each other
Method of folding and unfolding a chain
Definition of normal tension
Purpose of an index sketch
Meaning of azimuth
These questions examine the essential theoretical foundation needed for practical surveying.
Section B – Analytical & Field-Based Questions (21 Marks)
Students must attempt any three out of five in-depth questions. These require procedural knowledge, numerical computation, and application of field methods:
Classification of surveying based on instruments used, and listing of equipment for a chosen method
Surveying details by offsets from survey lines, merits of different offsets, and why short offsets are preferable
A complete level book problem involving:
Rise and fall/RL calculations for nine staff readings
Finding RL of a ceiling using inverted staff
Determining staff readings on pegs to achieve a gradient of 1 in 100
Meaning of shift, and proving geometric properties of a transition curve
Purpose of providing a curve, with derivation of the equation of an ideal transition curve
This section tests computational accuracy and mastery of standard field procedures used in civil engineering.
Section C – Long Questions (35 Marks)
Students must attempt one part from each of the five questions. These questions involve advanced concepts, corrections, and practical design:
Q3 – Tape Corrections / Error Sources
Applying correction for temperature, tension, sag, and other parameters for a 30-m steel tape used at different conditions
Sources of errors in chaining and precautions to minimize them
Q4 – Traverse Adjustment / Local Attraction
Detecting and correcting fore and back bearings for local attraction
Meaning of balancing a traverse, with three adjustment methods
Q5 – Orientation & Contouring
Meaning of orientation and its methods with sketches
Definition, characteristics, and uses of contour maps
Q6 – Traversing & Bubble Tube Sensitiveness
Meaning and determination of bubble sensitiveness
Meaning of traversing and describing its various methods
Q7 – Transition & Circular Curves
Designing a circular curve with given speed, centrifugal ratio, and rate of change of radial acceleration
Necessity of transition curves and methods of finding their length
This section evaluates a student’s ability to apply surveying theory in real-world engineering design and field problems.
Summary
The Surveying (RCE-302) exam paper thoroughly assesses student competency in:
Basic surveying instruments and terms
Leveling and RL computation
Offsets, traversing, and chain surveying
Contouring and map interpretation
Transition and circular curve design
Local attraction correction
Tape corrections and error minimization
It is a complete academic resource for students studying civil engineering surveying principles and field practices.
