(SEM IV) THEORY EXAMINATION 2023-24 BASICS OF DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
This document is a B.Tech (Semester IV) Theory Examination Question Paper for the subject BOE407 – Basics of Database Management Systems, conducted in the academic year 2023–2024.
It is a 3-hour, 70-mark exam designed to evaluate a student’s understanding of database fundamentals, relational model, SQL, schema design, normalization, dependencies, concurrency control, serializability, ER modeling, and DBMS architecture.
SECTION A – Short Answer Questions (14 Marks)
Seven 2-mark conceptual questions covering DBMS basics:
Difference between logical vs physical data independence
Example of a schema in an RDBMS
Definition of a primary key
Function of the SELECT statement
One characteristic of SQL (non-procedural, declarative)
One inference rule for deriving Functional Dependencies (FDs) (e.g., Armstrong’s axioms)
A property of ACID (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability)
This section tests fundamental theoretical concepts.
SECTION B – Descriptive and Applied Questions (21 Marks)
Attempt any three of the following:
a. Mapping Constraints & Impact on Design
Explains constraints like: Cardinality ratio (1:1, 1:N, N:M)
Participation constraints Their effect on database schema representation.
b. SELECT Statement Filtering
Examples illustrating WHERE clause filtering rows based on conditions.
c. ORDER BY Clause
How sorting works in SQL (ASC/DESC) + example queries.
d. Conditions for Fifth Normal Form (5NF)
Explanation of join dependencies, lossless join, and examples.
e. Time Stamping in Concurrency Control
How timestamps order transactions to avoid conflicts in DBMS.
SECTION C – Long Answer / Analytical Questions (35 Marks Total)
Each question contains two options; students must attempt one from each number.
3. DBMS Modules / ER Diagram Rules (7 Marks)
Option (a)
Major DBMS modules:
Storage manager Query processor
Transaction manager Metadata manager
Buffer manager
Option (b)
Rules for ER diagrams: Use of rectangles, ovals, diamonds
Cardinalities & relationships Key attributes notation
4. Relational Model / Relational Algebra vs SQL (7 Marks)
Option (a)
Basic concepts: Relations, tuples, domains
Attribute values Keys and integrity constraints
Option (b)
Comparison of Relational Algebra and SQL:
Syntax differences Set-based operations
Expressive capabilities
5. Data Types / SQL Commands (7 Marks)
Option (a)
Importance of choosing proper data types (space, performance, constraints).
Option (b)
Syntax & usage of:
CREATE SELECT
INSERT DELETE UPDATE
6. Dependencies / Normalization (7 Marks)
Option (a)
Definition and role of multivalued dependencies.
Option (b)
Concept & importance of normalization in reducing redundancy and anomalies.
7. Serializability / Transaction Scheduling (7 Marks)
Option (a)
Definitions of:
Conflict Serializability
View Serializability
And key differences.
Option (b)
How transaction scheduling influences correctness and performance of DBMS.
Overall Purpose of the Document
This exam paper evaluates a student's competency in:
Database Concepts
Schemas, keys, relational model, DBMS architecture.
SQL Programming
SELECT, ORDER BY, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE.
Schema Design & Normalization
FDs, MVDs, 5NF, lossless join conditions.
Data Independence & ER Modeling
Logical/physical independence; ER diagram conventions.
Query Processing & Relational Algebra
Difference between theoretical and practical query languages.
Concurrency Control & Transaction Management
Locking, timestamps, serializability, scheduling.
Overall, the exam includes theory, examples, design concepts, and database logic—ensuring a complete assessment of Database Management Systems at the introductory level.
