SECTION A — Short Descriptive Answers
Section A asks basic thermodynamics concepts like adiabatic flame temperature, stoichiometric air, enthalpy of formation, boiler mountings, jet vs surface condensers, impulse vs reaction turbines, rocket propulsion, and jet engines. Each answer should be a short paragraph explaining the meaning and purpose of the concept.
Extra sample questions:
Describe the meaning of calorific value in a short paragraph.
Explain the term “mean effective pressure” briefly.
What is dryness fraction of steam? Explain in 4–5 lines.
SECTION B — Medium-Length Descriptions
Section B contains questions requiring a complete paragraph explaining a process, derivation, or cycle. These include Otto cycle efficiency, Rankine cycle performance, boiler mountings, turbine blade efficiency, and compressor volumetric efficiency. The answer should explain the concept, steps, or formulas in a connected paragraph.
Extra sample questions:
Explain the Diesel cycle in a descriptive paragraph.
Describe the effect of intercooling on compressor work.
Explain the working of a steam condenser.
SECTION C — Long Descriptive Paragraph Needed
Section C includes full calculations, cycle analysis, sketches, combustion problems, Rankine modifications, boiler draught, condenser performance, nozzle theory, and propulsion system calculations. Each answer must be a long descriptive paragraph, sometimes with formulas or reasoning.
Extra sample questions:
Explain the rankine cycle with reheating and regeneration in a descriptive paragraph.
Describe the detailed steps of complete fuel combustion and flue gas composition.
Explain perfect intercooling in compressors in one detailed paragraph.
