(SEM IV) THEORY EXAMINATION 2021-22 MATERIALS, TESTING & CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES
SECTION–A (Short Questions, but Concept-Based and Thought-Oriented)
Section–A of the paper contains ten questions, each carrying two marks, but although the marks are small, the questions are concept-heavy. This section is designed to test your understanding of fundamental ideas related to building materials, construction practices, and the reasoning behind using specific materials or methods. The questions do not require lengthy explanations, but they demand clarity, precision, and strong conceptual knowledge. For example, you are asked why it is important to study the properties of building materials, which requires you to explain how materials behave under load, how durable they are, how they respond to moisture, temperature, and stress, and why engineers must understand these factors before selecting them for construction. Another question asks how bricks are structurally tested; though the answer is short, you must know about crushing strength tests, water absorption tests, and hardness tests. Questions such as the difference between a lintel and a beam, examples of natural ventilation, and the purpose of an escalator check your general awareness of how buildings function and how specific elements contribute to safety, comfort, and convenience. Overall, Section–A evaluates basic knowledge, definitions, applications, and distinctions that form the backbone of civil engineering understanding.
SECTION–B (Descriptive, Detailed, and Application-Oriented Questions)
Section–B moves from fundamental ideas to deeper descriptive explanations. In this section, the paper provides five long-answer questions, out of which you must choose any three. Each question carries ten marks, and therefore the expectation is that you write a detailed, well-structured, and well-explained answer. The questions here cover important materials and construction practices that require not only theoretical understanding but also the ability to elaborate in meaningful depth. For instance, one question asks you to discuss the engineering properties of steel, stone, and timber. This requires you to mention their tensile strength, compressive behaviour, elasticity, toughness, durability, and suitability for different structural applications. Similarly, the question on glass asks you to describe its characteristics such as brittleness, transparency, chemical resistance, and its architectural uses. Another question in this section focuses on termite control, requiring you to explain preventive treatments like soil poisoning, use of termite-resistant materials, and maintenance strategies. Section–B also includes questions requiring sketches, such as the cross-section of a building or the diagram of a flushing cistern. These require you to understand structural elements clearly and illustrate how they fit together. This section tests your descriptive writing, ability to explain processes, and skill in combining text with diagrams.
SECTION–C (High-Weightage, Technical, and Skill-Based Application Questions)
Section–C is the most detailed part of the exam and carries the largest weightage. This section is divided into multiple groups (Q3, Q4, Q5, Q6, Q7), and from each group you must answer one question. Each question carries ten marks. The questions in this section require deeper technical understanding and, in many cases, the ability to draw neat sketches. For example, one of the questions asks you to state and explain the slump cone test for cement concrete. This requires clear step-by-step explanation of how the test is performed, the meaning of various slump shapes, and how slump correlates with concrete workability. Another question asks you to describe the process for measuring timber moisture content and then explain the concept of seasoning, which involves controlled drying of timber to improve its durability and dimensional stability.
In the next group, the exam asks about steel manufacturing processes. Here you are expected to not only name different methods but also describe one process in detail, along with a flowchart. Similarly, questions about thermal insulation expect you to explain materials, methods, and the importance of preventing heat transfer through exposed openings like doors and windows.
Further questions in the remaining groups explore construction of geometrical stairs, cavity walls with sketches, timber doors and their joints, mud-phuska terracing, acoustic design factors, and various types of pointing techniques. These require both theoretical understanding and the ability to present the information in clear, diagram-supported form. Section–C tests your practical engineering knowledge, your memory of procedures, your drawing skills, and your ability to link theory with real construction practices.
FINAL WRAP-UP (Easy Summary in Long Form)
This question paper is structured in a way that checks the student’s complete command over the subject. Section–A evaluates the basics, Section–B tests your descriptive and analytical ability, while Section–C assesses your technical depth, practical skill, and clarity in demonstrating construction methods through sketches. Anyone preparing for this exam must study building materials, construction practices, drawing techniques, testing procedures, and planning principles in a connected manner. The paper expects students to be both conceptually clear and able to express their knowledge in a structured and professionally sound way.
