(SEM V) THEORY EXAMINATION 2024-25 INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION AND CONTROL
Subject: Industrial Automation and Control
Code: BEE053
Duration: 3 Hours
Maximum Marks: 70
Exam Year: 2024–25
Sections: A, B, and C
Type: Theoretical + Conceptual Questions
SECTION A – Short Answer Questions (2 × 7 = 14 Marks)
Each question is brief and conceptual. Define industrial automation.
Explain the purpose of the Modbus protocol. Define SCADA.
Describe a contactor. Write about the modes of HART protocol.
Based on poles and throws, list the types of relays. Elaborate on the DOL (Direct-On-Line) circuit.
SECTION B – Medium-Length Questions (7 × 3 = 21 Marks)
Attempt any three of the following:
Explain the architecture of industrial automation with a diagram.
Overview of PLC history, evolution, and current trends.
Discuss the working principles of timers (on-delay, off-delay, cyclic, retentive) in PLC programming.
Explain the 4–20mA current loop and its role in industrial automation.
Discuss the role and advantages of pneumatics in automation systems.
SECTION C – Long/Analytical Questions (7 × 5 = 35 Marks)
Attempt one part from each question.
Q3
a. Explain PLC and SCADA roles in automation systems.
b. Explain hydraulic systems in automation — their applications and advantages.
Q4
a. Discuss relays as memory elements in automation circuits (with example).
b. Explain how industrial sensors improve automation performance.
Q5
a. Classify PLCs based on size, functionality, and application.
b. Explain math instructions and up/down counters in PLCs.
Q6
a. Discuss working principles and uses of optical, inductive, and capacitive sensors.
b. Draw and explain ladder logic for motor start-stop conditions.
Q7
a. Explain operation of 2/2 and 3/2 valves with valve-actuator examples.
b. Explain components of a pneumatic system (compressor, air tank, FRL unit).
Tips for Students
Focus on understanding PLCs, SCADA, sensors, and communication protocols (Modbus, HART).
Practice drawing automation diagrams and ladder logic circuits.
Revise control system basics and the applications of pneumatics/hydraulics.
Understand industrial communication standards and safety practices.
