(SEM V) THEORY EXAMINATION 2022-23 ENGINEERING GEOLOGY
SECTION A – Short Answer Type (2 Marks each)
(a) What is X-ray Diffraction (XRD) Analysis?
XRD analysis is a laboratory method used to determine the crystal structure and mineral composition of rocks and soils.
When X-rays strike a crystalline mineral, they are diffracted at specific angles governed by Bragg’s Law (2d sin θ = nλ), where d is the spacing between atomic planes. The resulting diffraction pattern acts like a fingerprint that identifies the mineral present.
Uses in engineering geology:
Identifying clay minerals that may cause foundation swelling.
Determining alteration products in weathered rock.
Studying cement hydration products and pozzolanic reactions.
(b) What is an Aquiclude?
An Aquiclude is a geologic formation that may store water but does not allow it to pass through because of its very low permeability.
Typical examples: clay layers, shale beds, and compact limestone.
Aquicludes play a vital role in groundwater hydrology by:
Acting as confining layers above and below aquifers.
Controlling the direction of groundwater flow.
Maintaining the pressure in confined aquifers that gives rise to artesian wells.
SECTION B – Long Answer Type (10 Marks each)
(a) What is Rock Mechanics? Discuss its Scope in Engineering Geology.
Rock mechanics is the science dealing with the behavior of rock masses under stress and strain conditions. It explains how rocks respond to natural forces and human activities like excavation or blasting.
Scope and applications:
Tunneling and Underground Construction: Helps determine safe overburden pressure, support design, and rock-bolt requirements.
Slope Stability: Predicts potential landslides by analyzing shear strength and cohesion of rock slopes.
Dam and Foundation Engineering: Evaluates bearing capacity and permeability of the foundation rocks.
Mining Engineering: Guides excavation methods and pillar design.
Earthquake Engineering: Studies stress release and fault reactivation potential.
By applying rock-mechanics principles, civil engineers ensure safety, economy, and durability of structures built on or within rock masses.
(b) Discuss Cleavage and Hardness of Minerals.
Cleavage:
Cleavage is the tendency of a mineral to split along specific planes of weakness related to its crystal lattice.
It is described by the number and direction of cleavage planes, such as:
Mica: perfect cleavage in one direction.
Calcite: perfect rhombohedral cleavage in three directions.
Halite: cubic cleavage in three mutually perpendicular directions.
Cleavage helps in identifying minerals and understanding how rocks will break during quarrying.
Hardness:
Hardness measures a mineral’s resistance to scratching.
Determined using Mohs Hardness Scale (1–10) where talc = 1 (softest) and diamond = 10 (hardest).
Hardness influences durability and abrasion resistance of building stones. For example, granite (6–7) is harder and more durable than limestone (3–4).
SECTION C – Very Long Answer Type (10 Marks each)
(a) Highlight the Importance of Engineering Geology in Civil Engineering Works.
Engineering geology is essential for ensuring that civil structures are safe, economical, and environmentally sustainable.
Key importance:
Site Investigation: Determines the type, thickness, and strength of subsurface materials before designing foundations.
Foundation Design: Knowledge of soil and rock properties prevents settlement and failure.
Dam and Reservoir Projects: Geological mapping identifies leakage zones, faults, and joints that may affect water tightness.
Tunnels and Highways: Geology guides alignment to avoid weak zones, landslides, and groundwater inflow.
Earthquake-resistant Design: Locating faults and seismic zones minimizes structural risk.
Material Selection: Understanding mineral composition aids in choosing durable stone, sand, and aggregate.
In short, engineering geology forms the bridge between geology and civil engineering, ensuring that natural conditions are fully understood before construction begins.
(b) What is Metamorphism? Discuss the Various Agents of Metamorphism.
Metamorphism is the process by which pre-existing rocks (igneous, sedimentary, or older metamorphic) are transformed into new rocks due to changes in temperature, pressure, or chemical environment, while remaining in the solid state.
Agents of metamorphism:
Heat: Derived from magma intrusion or deep burial; causes recrystallization (e.g., limestone → marble).
Pressure: Due to tectonic forces or overburden; produces foliated textures like schist and gneiss.
Chemically Active Fluids: Hot water and gases migrate through pores, promoting mineral changes and metasomatism.
Time: The longer the exposure, the greater the degree of metamorphism.
Types:
Contact Metamorphism: Near igneous intrusions.
Regional Metamorphism: Over large areas during mountain building.
Dynamic Metamorphism: Associated with fault zones and shearing.
Metamorphism thus leads to stronger, more crystalline rocks that are significant for tunnel linings, foundations, and ornamental use.
Summary:
Section A: XRD & Aquiclude (short concepts)
Section B: Rock Mechanics & Cleavage/Hardness (applied geology)
Section C: Importance of Engineering Geology & Metamorphism (conceptual depth)
