SECTION A – Short Answer Type Questions (2 Marks each)

(a) What is Force Theory?

The Force Theory of state formation explains that the state was established through force, conquest, and domination.
According to this theory, strong individuals or groups imposed their control over weaker ones, using physical power or warfare to establish authority and governance.

Key Points:

The state originated not by consent but through coercion and military might.

Supported by thinkers like Treitschke, Gumplowicz, and Oppenheimer.

Example: Formation of kingdoms and empires in early civilizations through conquest (e.g., Mauryan Empire under Chandragupta).

Thus, the Force Theory emphasizes power and authority as the foundation of political organization.

(b) Mention the Four Ashramas in Hinduism.

In Hindu philosophy, human life is divided into four ashramas (stages of life), each with specific duties and goals for spiritual development:

Brahmacharya (Student Life):            Period of learning under a guru.

Focus on self-discipline, celibacy, and acquisition of knowledge.

Grihastha (Householder Life):            Marriage and family responsibilities.

Pursuit of wealth (Artha) and pleasure (Kama) within dharma.

Vanaprastha (Retired Life):                 Gradual withdrawal from worldly life.

Focus on spiritual reflection and guidance to younger generations.

Sannyasa (Renounced Life):

Complete detachment from material possessions.        Devotion to attaining Moksha (liberation).

Together, the ashramas guide individuals through balanced worldly and spiritual duties.

SECTION B – Long Answer Type Questions (10 Marks each)

(a) Define the Varnashrama System and Āshrama or Stages of Life.

The Varnashrama System combines two essential concepts in Hindu social philosophy — Varna (social order) and Ashrama (life stages).

1. Varna (Social Order):

Society was divided into four varnas based on duties (karma) rather than birth:

Brahmins: Priests and teachers; performed religious duties and preserved knowledge.

Kshatriyas: Warriors and rulers; responsible for protection and governance.

Vaishyas: Traders and farmers; engaged in commerce and agriculture.

Shudras: Servants and laborers; provided service to other classes.

2. Ashrama (Stages of Life):

As discussed earlier – Brahmacharya, Grihastha, Vanaprastha, and Sannyasa.

Philosophical Essence:

Together, they ensure balance between duty, morality, and spirituality.

The system emphasizes Dharma (righteousness) as the guiding principle for individual and social conduct.

(b) Write the Major Cave Architecture in India.

Cave architecture represents an early and significant form of Indian rock-cut architecture, showcasing religious and artistic developments.

1. Buddhist Caves:

Ajanta Caves (Maharashtra): 29 caves with mural paintings depicting Jataka tales.

Ellora Caves: 34 caves (12 Buddhist, 17 Hindu, 5 Jain) carved between 6th–9th century CE.

Barabar Caves (Bihar): Oldest rock-cut caves, associated with the Mauryan period.

2. Hindu Caves:

Elephanta Caves (Maharashtra): Dedicated to Lord Shiva; notable for Trimurti sculpture.

Badami Caves (Karnataka): Showcases early Chalukyan architecture.

3. Jain Caves:

Found in Ellora, Udaigiri, and Khandagiri.

Feature detailed carvings and inscriptions related to Jain Tirthankaras.

SECTION C – Very Long Answer Type Questions (10 Marks each)

3. Post-Vedic Period:

Emergence of Brahmi script (3rd century BCE), used in Ashokan inscriptions.

4. Classical Period:

Sanskrit reached literary perfection (works of Kalidasa, Panini’s grammar).

Regional languages evolved (Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Bengali, etc.).

5. Medieval and Modern Periods:

Influence of Persian and Arabic due to Islamic rule.

Emergence of Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, Gujarati as modern languages.

Conclusion:
The evolution of Indian languages and scripts reveals a journey from pictorial to phonetic forms, symbolizing India’s unity in diversity.

(b) Write an Essay on Vedic Literature.

The Vedic Literature represents the oldest and most sacred scriptures of Hinduism, forming the foundation of Indian philosophy and culture.

1. The Four Vedas:
