(SEM V) THEORY EXAMINATION 2017-18 MICROPROCESSOR & ITS APPLICATIONS
Microprocessor & Its Applications (NEE-504)
Section-Wise Important Questions & Study Notes
SECTION–A
(Attempt all questions | 2 × 10 = 20)
This section tests basic concepts, definitions, and short explanations.
Write 2–3 lines only, keep answers crisp.
1. Microprocessor vs Microcontroller
A microprocessor requires external memory and I/O, while a microcontroller has CPU, memory, and I/O integrated on a single chip.
2. Interfacing Logical Devices
Interfacing logical devices means connecting external devices like memory and I/O peripherals with the microprocessor for data exchange.
3. Nibble & Word
A nibble is 4 bits; a word is the number of bits processed at a time (16 bits in 8086).
4. Mnemonics & Program
Mnemonics are symbolic instruction names; a program is a set of instructions written to perform a task.
5. Basic Operations of Microprocessor
Fetching, decoding, executing instructions, and storing results (explain with block diagram idea).
6. Languages of Digital Computer
Machine language, assembly language, and high-level languages.
7. Compiler & Interpreter
Compiler translates entire program at once; interpreter translates line-by-line.
8. Interrupts in 8085
Hardware interrupts, software interrupts, maskable, and non-maskable interrupts.
9. Flag Register of 8085
Contains flags: Sign, Zero, Auxiliary Carry, Parity, Carry (draw simple block).
10. Addressing Modes in 8086
Immediate, register, direct, indirect, indexed, and relative addressing modes.
SECTION–B
(Attempt any THREE | 10 × 3 = 30)
Answers should be descriptive, use headings and diagrams.
1. Minimum Mode Operation of 8086
Explain minimum mode signals, control signals, and block diagram. Mention when it is used.
2. Procedure vs Macro (8086)
Compare based on memory usage, execution speed, flexibility, and reusability.
3. 8085 Instructions
Explain working of: POP PSW
PUSH PSW XTHL
SPHL CMP M
4. 8237 DMA Controller
Explain features, block diagram, and working of DMA controller.
5. Internal Architecture of 8255
Explain ports, control word register, modes of operation, and applications.
SECTION–C
(Attempt any ONE | 10 × 1 = 10)
Long conceptual questions.
3(a) Evolution of Microprocessors & Addressing Modes
Explain different generations of microprocessors and addressing modes of 8085 with examples.
OR
3(b) Architecture of 8086
Explain BIU & EU, pipelining, and memory segmentation with neat diagram.
