(SEM V) THEORY EXAMINATION 2017-18 TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING-I
Transportation Engineering–I (NCE-502)
Section-Wise Important Questions & Study Notes
SECTION–A
(Attempt all questions | 2 × 10 = 20)
This section checks definitions, short notes, and basic concepts.
Write 2–3 lines only for each answer.
Typical Cross-Section of Macadam Construction
Macadam road consists of compacted layers of broken stones with proper camber, shoulders, and drainage for strength and durability.
Indian Roads Congress (IRC)
IRC is the apex body that formulates standards, specifications, and guidelines for road construction and traffic engineering in India.
Kerbs and Shoulders
Kerbs separate carriageway from footpath, while shoulders provide lateral support to pavement and space for emergency stopping.
Setback Distance
The minimum distance between the edge of the road and obstructions to ensure adequate sight distance.
Passenger Car Unit (PCU)
PCU converts heterogeneous traffic into equivalent passenger cars for traffic analysis.
Advantages & Disadvantages of Traffic Signals
Advantages: orderly traffic flow, reduced accidents.
Disadvantages: delay during low traffic, maintenance cost.
Kerb Marking and Object Marking
Kerb marking guides drivers at road edges; object marking highlights obstructions for safety.
Flash and Fire Point of Bitumen
Flash point is the temperature at which bitumen vapors ignite momentarily; fire point is when it burns continuously.
Expansion and Contraction Joints
Provided in cement concrete pavements to allow movement due to temperature changes.
Equivalent Single Wheel Load (ESWL)
A single wheel load that produces the same stress as a dual or multiple wheel load system.
SECTION–B
(Attempt any THREE | 10 × 3 = 30)
Numericals + theory. Show steps clearly.
1. Transition Curve Design (Numerical)
Given design speed, radius, rate of superelevation, and widening:
Calculate length of transition curve Calculate shift
Use IRC design criteria.
2. Highway Planning Surveys
Explain briefly: Map study
Reconnaissance survey Preliminary survey
Final location survey
3. Westergaard’s Stress Analysis (Numerical)
Calculate stresses at: Interior
Edge Corner of CC pavement
Using given E, μ, slab thickness, wheel load, and radius of contact.
4. Road Patterns
Explain features of: Rectangular pattern
Radial pattern Radial & circular pattern
Star & grid pattern
5. Summit Curve Design (Numerical)
For given ascending and descending gradients: Find length of summit curve
Based on stopping sight distance (SSD)
SECTION–C
(Attempt any ONE | 10 × 1 = 10)
3(a) Historical Development of Roads
Discuss:
Roman roads (features: camber, drainage, stone layers)
Difference between ancient and modern road construction
OR
3(b) Short Notes
Explain briefly: Central Road Fund
Nagpur Road Plan Star and Grid Pattern
Jayakar Committee
