PATTERN RECOGNITION (NCS-080)

According to the uploaded question paper

The Pattern Recognition examination is structured into three sections: A, B, and C. The paper gradually moves from fundamental probability concepts to advanced machine learning models and classification techniques. Below is a detailed explanation of each section in a continuous and properly explained format.

Section A – Fundamental Concepts of Probability and Learning (20 Marks)

Section A consists of ten compulsory short-answer questions, each carrying two marks. This section mainly tests your basic understanding of probability theory, statistical measures, and introductory machine learning concepts that form the foundation of pattern recognition.

The questions include definitions such as prior probability, expectation and mean, defuzzification, cluster analysis, and goodness-of-fit test. It also includes small probability-based numerical reasoning questions such as calculating outcomes of dice rolls or roulette probabilities. Additionally, conceptual machine learning topics such as supervised vs unsupervised learning, discriminant functions, and basic Bayesian concepts are included.

This section evaluates whether you understand the mathematical and statistical basis behind pattern recognition systems. Even though the answers are short, conceptual clarity is essential because these ideas are used in advanced sections of the paper.

Section B – Core Algorithms and Learning Techniques (30 Marks)

Section B requires you to attempt any three questions, each carrying ten marks. This section focuses on core algorithms used in pattern recognition and machine learning.

The topics include clustering techniques such as agglomerative clustering, dimensionality reduction methods like Principal Component Analysis (PCA), k-nearest neighbor estimation, supervised and unsupervised learning models, and Bayesian decision theory for two-category classification.

In this section, you are expected to explain algorithms step-by-step. For example, when describing agglomerative clustering, you should begin with individual clusters and explain how clusters are merged based on distance measures. When explaining PCA, you should describe covariance matrix calculation, eigenvalue and eigenvector computation, and transformation into lower-dimensional space.

Similarly, Bayesian decision theory requires explanation of prior probability, likelihood, posterior probability, and risk minimization. The examiner expects logical flow, mathematical reasoning, and clarity in explaining algorithmic steps.

This section evaluates your understanding of classification, clustering, and statistical decision-making techniques.

Section C – Advanced Models, Statistical Testing, and Applications (50 Marks)

Section C carries the highest weightage and requires you to attempt one part from each question. This section tests advanced theoretical knowledge, mathematical modeling, and practical applications of pattern recognition.

The topics include fuzzy decision making and fuzzy classification, reinforcement learning, Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm, multivariate normal density functions, Chi-square goodness-of-fit test, Hidden Markov Models (HMM), Parzen window convergence, Naïve Bayes classifier, and probabilistic neural networks.

For example, on page 2 of the paper, a detailed Chi-square goodness-of-fit problem is provided with yearly suicide data from 1978 to 1989. You are required to test whether the number of suicides differs significantly from an equal distribution across years. This requires calculating expected frequency, computing Chi-square statistic, determining degrees of freedom, and comparing with the critical value.

Similarly, the Naïve Bayes classifier question includes a weather dataset table and asks you to classify a new instance (Sunny, Hot, Normal, False). You must compute posterior probabilities for both classes (“Yes” and “No”) using conditional probabilities from the dataset and decide the final classification.

The section also includes Hidden Markov Models, where you must explain state transition probabilities, emission probabilities, and how HMM differs from traditional Markov models due to hidden states.

This section tests your analytical thinking, mathematical reasoning, and ability to apply algorithms to real datasets.

Overall Structure and Preparation Strategy

The paper is designed to move from foundational probability concepts in Section A to algorithmic understanding in Section B, and finally to advanced statistical models and real-world classification problems in Section C.

To score well:

Strengthen probability theory and statistical basics.

Practice writing algorithm steps clearly.

Understand Bayesian decision theory thoroughly.

Practice numerical problems such as Chi-square and Naïve Baye
