Theory Examination (Semester-II) 2015-16 PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION
This is a 3-hour Theory Examination for Communication Skills / Applied English (NAS-204 / EAS-204 / NAS-104) with a total of 100 marks. The question paper is divided into three sections, and students must attempt questions as per the instructions. The paper tests English grammar, vocabulary, sentence correction, homophones, communication theory, negotiation skills, listening comprehension, and understanding of essays prescribed in the syllabus.
Section – A (20 Marks)
Section A requires students to attempt any four out of several short-answer parts.
Each question carries 5 marks, designed to test basic English usage and grammar.
Topics include:
requirements of good writing
methods to introduce variety in sentence construction
meaning and usage of selected vocabulary words
difference between commonly confused homophones (Gate–Gait, Birth–Berth, Stationary–Stationery, etc.)
flow of communication in an organization
role of upward communication in promoting democracy within an organization
This section checks basic grammar, vocabulary, sentence formation skills, and communication concepts.
Section – B (20 Marks)
Section B requires students to attempt any two questions, each worth 10 marks.
This section tests the student’s ability to understand professional communication and includes:
types of negotiation and qualities of a good negotiator
methods to improve comprehension and listening skills
importance of listening in effective speaking
correcting grammatically incorrect sentences
meaning and usage of homophones (Coarse–Course, Deceased–Diseased, etc.)
This section focuses on practical English usage, workplace communication, and grammar correction.
Section – C (20 Marks)
Section C requires students to attempt any two long-answer questions, each carrying 10 marks.
These questions are based on essays or reading material prescribed in the course. Topics include:
scientific approach in human activity as explained by M. E. Prior
functions of philosophy in criticizing and synthesizing scientific findings, as described by A. J. Bahm
explanation of key ideas, arguments, and conclusions from the essays
This section tests the student’s analytical ability, interpretation of essays, and understanding of philosophical and scientific viewpoints.
Overall Summary
This question paper evaluates a student’s ability in:
English grammar and usage
vocabulary building
sentence correction
communication theory
listening and negotiation skills
understanding of essays and concepts related to science and philosophy
Section A checks short conceptual understanding,
Section B checks applied grammar and communication,
and Section C checks deep comprehension and essay-based answers.
