(SEM VI) THEORY EXAMINATION 2021-22 UNDERSTANDING THE HUMAN BEING COMPREHENSIVELY- HUMAN ASPIRATIONS & ITS FULFILLMENT
Understanding the Human Being Comprehensively (KOE069)
Section-Wise Exam Answers & Notes
SECTION A – Short Answer Questions (2 Marks Each)
1. Human Consciousness
Human consciousness refers to the awareness present in a human being that enables understanding, imagination, desire, evaluation, and decision-making. It is the ability of the Self to recognize reality, relationships, and purpose beyond physical needs.
2. Right Understanding
Right understanding means having clarity about oneself, relationships, society, and nature based on reality. It helps a person distinguish between what is temporary and what is permanent, leading to harmony and fulfillment in life.
3. Three Definite Aspects of Any Unit
Every unit in existence has three definite aspects:
• Constitution – what the unit is made of
• Structure – how it is organized
• Function – how it behaves or works
4. Three Realities for a Fulfilling Life
A fulfilling life requires understanding of:
• The Self (I)
• The Body
• The External World (Nature & Society)
5. Communication Between Self and Body
The Self communicates with the body through feelings, sensations, and signals. The Self decides, while the body executes actions, making coordination essential for health and harmony.
6. Bases of Taste Activated in the Self
With right understanding, the Self experiences trust, respect, affection, care, gratitude, and love. These are not sensory pleasures but deep feelings that provide lasting happiness.
7. Material Unit, Conscious Unit, and Space
A material unit has only physical existence, a conscious unit (human being) has awareness, and space is all-pervasive, accommodating both material and conscious units.
8. Submergence
Submergence refers to the process where a unit dissolves into a higher-order unit without losing its existence, such as water merging into the river.
9. Gratitude and Self-Restraint
Gratitude naturally leads to self-restraint because recognizing others’ contributions encourages balanced behavior and avoids exploitation or excess.
10. Wisdom
Wisdom is the ability to live according to right understanding, applying knowledge in daily life to ensure harmony within oneself and with others.
SECTION B – Long Answer Questions (10 Marks Each)
1. Dimension of Thought and Its Activities
The dimension of thought includes imagining, analyzing, comparing, selecting, and deciding. These activities are interrelated because imagination creates options, analysis evaluates them, comparison helps choose the best, and decision leads to action. For example, choosing a career involves imagining options, analyzing skills, comparing outcomes, and finally deciding.
2. Dimension of Realization
The dimension of realization is the highest level of understanding where a person clearly sees reality as it is. Its activities include self-exploration, verification of beliefs, and living with clarity. Realization ensures consistency between thought, behavior, and action.
3. Sources of Happiness and Continuity
Common sources of happiness like money, entertainment, and achievements provide temporary pleasure. Continuous happiness can only come from right understanding, healthy relationships, and meaningful participation in society.
4. Co-Existence: Ever-Present and Ever-Expressive
Co-existence means everything exists in harmony with everything else. It is ever-present because existence never disappears, ever-effective because interactions continuously occur, and ever-expressive because harmony is visible in nature.
5. Problems of Society and Role of Realization
Social problems like corruption, violence, and exploitation arise from lack of right understanding. Awakening in realization helps individuals act responsibly, fostering trust, justice, and cooperation in society.
SECTION C – Analytical / Application-Based Answers (10 Marks)
1. Human Being as Co-Existence of Self and Body
A human being consists of the Self (conscious entity) and the body (physical entity). The Self is central because it decides values, goals, and actions. For example, hunger belongs to the body, but deciding what and how much to eat belongs to the Self.
2. Four Dimensions of Human Being
The four dimensions are:
• Physical • Mental (thought)
• Emotional (feelings) • Realization
These dimensions are interconnected, and growth in realization ensures harmony in the other three.
3. Natural Characteristics and Their Importance
Natural characteristics refer to inherent properties of nature such as continuity, coexistence, and self-regulation. Understanding these helps engineering students design sustainable systems aligned with nature.
4. Behavior, Work, and Participation
Behavior reflects values, work reflects skills, and participation reflects contribution to society. Without right understanding, imbalance occurs, leading to stress, conflict, and environmental damage.
5. Expectation vs Desire for Happiness
Expectation depends on external conditions, while desire for happiness is an inner aspiration. Expectation leads to disappointment, but understanding-based desire leads to fulfillment.
6. Existence and Development
Existence consists of temporary (body, material objects) and continuous (Self, space) realities. Development occurs through enrichment of understanding, not destruction of nature.
7. Human Conduct: Values, Policy, and Character
Values guide intention, policy guides planning, and character reflects behavior. Together, they ensure ethical and professional excellence.
8. Role of This Course in Professional Life
This course helps professionals make ethical decisions, maintain work-life balance, ensure sustainability, handle conflicts peacefully, and contribute positively to society.
